FURNISHINGS
Something in a store may look like an elephant in the room when you bring it home or it could be too small to have any significance. Always vary the scale and proportion. TIP: the most pleasing-to-the-eye arrangement numbers are by 3's or 5's rather than by even numbers.
DON'T OVERDO IT
Make sure you are going with things that feel comfortable. You will be using the area more than the designer or a friend, so make sure it is comfortable and makes you smile. Overly designed rooms are not realistically comfortable for everyday life.
PROPORTIONS
Rooms with high ceilings can make additives seem small. Keeping artworks (like in a museum) at eye level can help relate to human's scale and not the architecture's scale. If you're not sure, take a picture of the artwork at eye level and at your preference level. It can help give you an idea of where to place the piece and if you would need something bigger or smaller.
